Description

Buitenveldert Roman Catholic Cemetery is situated in a park-like, urban setting in North Holland. The cemetery is owned and operated by the Roman Catholic Parish Amstelland Augustinuskerk. In 1835, the cemetery opened behind the newly consecrated church of the "Sint Augustinus Parish in Nieuwer Amstel." In 1935, a new, larger church was built a short distance away on the corner of Amstelveenseweg and Kalfjeslaan. At that time the old church became the cemetery chapel and the adjoining rectory (built around 1903) became the cemetery office and a condolence area. In 2003 a memorial was unveiled in the cemetery in memory of unbaptised children. Until the 1960's, such children were not permitted to be buried in "sacred" ground and were buried outside the cemetery. The inscription on the memorial reads: Also from unconsecrated earth God has received children and listens to parent's tears.
